This course
provides rising seniors with the opportunity to “jump start” their personal
statement and college search. Students complete two or more solid drafts of
their personal statement; gain an understanding of college search research
techniques and the college application process; and acquire the knowledge
and confidence needed for successful campus visits and college interviews.
This enrichment course is team taught, with half the time spent on the
personal statement with an English teacher, and the balance with the
Assistant Director of College Counseling. |

102 Review for
Algebra II

For
students entering Algebra II (Recommended for students enrolling in Algebra
II, Honors Algebra II/Trig or Chemistry)
Students
review solving linear equations and inequalities, practice problem solving
skills, review writing and graphing linear equations and inequalities.
Students review working operations with real numbers, working with formulas,
and solving absolute value equations. They also review factoring and
quadratic equations |

103 Musical Theatre Dance

This
workshop is for the girl who dreams of being center
stage! Throughout the session, the participants select music,
rehearse, and perform an age appropriate musical theatre dance piece. As
part of the process, participants learn about musical theatre and the
different genres and styles of musical theatre dance. On the final day of
the workshop, participants perform for family, friends, and other workshop
participants. Participants should have a genuine interest in performing. |

104 Skills for Algebra I, part 1 |

Students
review basic math skills in preparation for Algebra I. Students review
operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, work with
formulas, and solve equations and verbal problems. |

springboard for creative writing. Students will create their own short
stories, poetry, and personal reflections. The course will culminate in the

our world. Students discuss their own experiences, take personality tests,

their work, and take home all finished products

Constructing with Chemistry

explore how fun chemistry can be as they spend time this summer in the chemistry
lab. Classes include making slime drip, oobleck slide, lava lamps flow, volcanoes erupt,
lemons light up, and more. Hands-on activities bring chemistry from the
textbook, into the kitchen, and on out the door. |

Introduction to Spanish

This
introductory Spanish language course is designed for students with limited
or no Spanish, who want to get a head start on next year’s class. A dynamic
and methodological approach is applied to develop listening, speaking,
reading, and Spanish writing skills. |

111 Transitioning to Geometry |

Students
review Algebra I skills and revisit basic geometry topics. Areas of study
include solving equations, finding slope and equations of lines, solving
verbal problems, graphing equations of lines, recognizing geometric figures
and their properties, and finding perimeter, area and volume. Students
practice geometric and algebraic principles with hands-on activities such as
puzzle problems, constructions, art, and story problems. |

Classical Voice CLOSED

Students are
guided through a survey of the greatest works of classical vocal music from
Panis Angelicus to Pagliacci. The class will explore the place of these works in history, and also their
connection to popular culture and modern music. Students gain an
appreciation for classical music, vocal technique, and poetry as they watch
and listen to the “pop” music of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. If
opera is considered the gesampkunstwerk (the complete art form), then this
is certainly the gesampkunstklasse (the complete art class)!!! |

113 The Latin of Harry Potter

the Harry Potter series? Well come join the fun! Students learn Latin by way
of J.K. Rowling’s
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
(Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis).
During the first
week of this course, students learn the fundamentals of Latin. In the second
week, students immerse themselves in a new and closer reading of Harry
Potter and develop language skills as they go along. |

preparation for the SAT. Students will take several sample tests and will

This enrichment course enables students to master the computer keyboard and
fundamental word processing skills. Students at the Academy are expected to
have good keyboarding skills. This course is especially helpful for
students considering Computer Applications or Publications Design. |

for family, friends, and other summer enrichment students. Theatre
exercises and warm-ups are also included in the workshop..

selected short stories by renowned writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez
(Colombia), Julio Cortazar (Argentina), Tito Monterroso (Guatemala), Isabel
Allende (Chile), and Ana Maria Matute (Spain). Students may read the
literary works either in Spanish or English. Class discussions are in
English. |

discover the original language of the New Testament! Did you know that the
word alphabet comes from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet?
Students learn the fundamentals of ancient Greek by way of original texts,
including the gospel of Matthew and Homer’s The Iliad. By the end of this
course, students will understand how fun and useful it is to know ancient
Greek.

Foods From Around the World

Join us to
experience the sights, scents, and tastes of exotic dishes from regions
spanning the world! Tania Hayek Mercer, chef and nutrition advisor
highlights five different regions of cuisine in this workshop:
French/Italian, Latin American, Mediterranean, Indian, and Thai/Asian.
Everyone attending learns how to make at least one dish from each region,
taste all the dishes made, and smell, touch, and see interesting herbs,
spices, vegetables and fruits, representative of each region. A variety of
cooking methods and utensils are discussed. Each student participates in
hands-on cooking and takes home the recipes and handouts distributed.
PLEASE NOTE: Unlike other summer enrichment offerings, this is a 2-hour
class. (1pm-3pm) |
