SESSION 1: June 16 – 27, 2008 

Morning Session

101    Your College Search and the Art of the Personal Statement

 Rising 12th grade only

This course provides rising seniors with the opportunity to “jump start” their personal statement and college search. Students complete two or more solid drafts of their personal statement; gain an understanding of college search research techniques and the college application process; and acquire the knowledge and confidence needed for successful campus visits and college interviews. This enrichment course is team taught, with half the time spent on the personal statement with an English teacher, and the balance with the Assistant Director of College Counseling.
102     Review for Algebra II 

 Rising 10th-11th 

For students entering Algebra II (Recommended for students enrolling in Algebra II, Honors Algebra II/Trig or Chemistry)

Students review solving linear equations and inequalities, practice problem solving skills, review writing and graphing linear equations and inequalities. Students review working operations with real numbers, working with formulas, and solving absolute value equations. They also review factoring and quadratic equations

103 Musical Theatre Dance -CLOSED

 Rising 5th-8th

This workshop is for the girl who dreams of being center stage!  Throughout the session, the participants select music, rehearse, and perform an age appropriate musical theatre dance piece. As part of the process, participants learn about musical theatre and the different genres and styles of musical theatre dance. On the final day of the workshop, participants perform for family, friends, and other workshop participants.  Participants should have a genuine interest in performing.

104     Skills for Algebra I, part 1

 Rising 8th-9th

Students review basic math skills in preparation for Algebra I. Students review operations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, work with formulas, and solve equations and verbal problems.
105     Creative Writing   Rising 5th-12th
 Students will read and discuss a variety of works and use these readings as a springboard for creative writing.  Students will create their own short stories, poetry, and personal reflections.  The course will culminate in the creation of individual student portfolios and the publication of a class literary journal.
106   Forensic Science CLOSED

 Rising 5th-12th

Whodunnit? This experiential course emphasizes solving problems from the detection and analysis of evidence left at a crime scene.  Get your detective skills focused for these labs.
107 Psychology for Young Women CLOSED

 Rising 8th -11th

Students explore the ways in which young women of their own age relate to themselves, each other, and our world.  Students discuss their own experiences, take personality tests, and study current gender psychological theory.
108  Ceramics

 Rising 6th -12

Students learn basic wedging techniques, work on the ceramics wheel, glaze their work, and take home all finished products


 

109   Constructing with Chemistry     CLOSED

 Rising 8th -10th
Students explore how fun chemistry can be as they spend time this summer in the chemistry lab. Classes include making slime drip, oobleck slide, lava lamps flow, volcanoes erupt, lemons light up, and more. Hands-on activities bring chemistry from the textbook, into the kitchen, and on out the door.

110   Introduction to Spanish     CLOSED

 Rising 6th -9th
This introductory Spanish language course is designed for students with limited or no Spanish, who want to get a head start on next year’s class. A dynamic and methodological approach is applied to develop listening, speaking, reading, and Spanish writing skills.
111 Transitioning to Geometry      Rising 10th
Students review Algebra I skills and revisit basic geometry topics. Areas of study include solving equations, finding slope and equations of lines, solving verbal problems, graphing equations of lines, recognizing geometric figures and their properties, and finding perimeter, area and volume. Students practice geometric and algebraic principles with hands-on activities such as puzzle problems, constructions, art, and story problems.
112 The Classical Voice    CLOSED             Rising 7th -11th
Students are guided through a survey of the greatest works of classical vocal music from Panis Angelicus to Pagliacci. The class will explore the place of these works in history, and also their connection to popular culture and modern music. Students gain an appreciation for classical music, vocal technique, and poetry as they watch and listen to the “pop” music of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. If opera is considered the gesampkunstwerk (the complete art form), then this is certainly the gesampkunstklasse (the complete art class)!!! 
113 The Latin of Harry Potter     CLOSED  Rising 6th -9th
Do you love the Harry Potter series? Well come join the fun! Students learn Latin by way of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Harrius Potter et Philosophi Lapis). During the first week of this course, students learn the fundamentals of Latin. In the second week, students immerse themselves in a new and closer reading of Harry Potter and develop language skills as they go along.

114     Review for SAT- Mathematics

 Rising 10th -12th

Students practice test-taking strategies and review mathematical skills in preparation for the SAT.  Students will take several sample tests and will use computer software to identify strengths and weaknesses.  


115     Keyboarding

 Rising 5th –12th

This enrichment course enables students to master the computer keyboard and fundamental word processing skills.  Students at the Academy are expected to have good keyboarding skills.  This course is especially helpful for students considering Computer Applications or Publications Design.

This workshop is for the teenager who loves performing and wants to explore comic timing, staged bits, clown techniques, and mime work, without reference to well developed scripts. Throughout the 10-day session, the participants will learn many improv based games and prepare different solo and group comic bits. On the final day of the workshop, the participants perform their audition materials for family, friends, and other summer enrichment students.  Theatre exercises and warm-ups are also included in the workshop.

118 Leadership Skills   CLOSED  Rising 9th -12th
Be a leader among your peers!  Students will learn various leadership styles and techniques that will give them the skills and confidence to be a student leader.  
119 The Spanish-American Short Story    CLOSED  Rising 10th -12th
This course introduces students to Spanish and Latin American literature. Students read selected short stories by renowned writers such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez (Colombia), Julio Cortazar (Argentina), Tito Monterroso (Guatemala), Isabel Allende (Chile), and Ana Maria Matute (Spain). Students may read the literary works either in Spanish or English. Class discussions are in English.

122 Retreat Leadership Training  Rising 10th -12th
This evening series inspires students in both their faith and in leadership. Students learn what it takes to have a good retreat experience and how to create it for others.

202     Skills for Algebra I, part 2

 Rising 8th-9th

Students will review variables, ratios, proportions, percents, exponents and powers, and the order of operations.  Students will solve problems and work with equations.  Students will review geometry formulas and work with data in charts and the coordinate plane.
203     Portfolio Building for Studio Art

 Rising 6th-11th

Students will work on a variety of media to help prepare and enhance their own portfolios.  This  especially helpful for students who will be taking an AP Studio Art course at some point in their future.

205 Journalism     NEW! Rising 8th -12th
Students learn the basic skills of journalism including newspaper and magazine reporting, writing, editing, layout, graphics and photojournalism. Students write articles and feature pieces, which will begin the student’s journalism portfolio. This class is ideal for students interested in working on the school yearbook or newspaper.
206 Forensic Science  CLOSED Rising 5th -11th

209 Introduction to Ancient Greek     CLOSED Rising 9th -12th
Come discover the original language of the New Testament!  Did you know that the word alphabet comes from the first two letters of the Greek alphabet? Students learn the fundamentals of ancient Greek by way of original texts, including the gospel of Matthew and Homer’s The Iliad. By the end of this course, students will understand how fun and useful it is to know ancient Greek.

Students practice test-taking strategies and review vocabulary and writing skills in preparation for the SAT. Students take several sample tests and use computer software to identify strengths and weaknesses.
212     High School Preparation Rising 8th –9th
Students address those study skills, time management, and peer pressure issues that students face in their high-school years.   The course is designed to make the transition from grade school to high school an easier one.
213 Photography     NEW! Rising 8th –12th
Students learn the basics of operating the 35mm camera. They learn black and white photo darkroom techniques, while examining composition and design in photography. Student critically analyze professional photographs and learn how to properly critique their own work, and the work of fellow students. All students require a 35 mm camera.
214 Drawing and Painting Techniques Rising 5th-10th
Students learn basic drawing approaches, and begin to paint using different painting techniques.


 

215  Musical Theatre Dance

 Rising 9th-12th

216 Gothic Art of Europe     CLOSED  Rising 10th-12th
Students learn about the impact of art on every day life in Europe during the 10th-15th centuries! Discover why this period was mistakenly labeled the “Dark Ages” and See how Europe’s most magnificent monuments, the Great Cathedrals, were designed, constructed, and decorated.
217 Foods From Around the World      CLOSED

 Rising 6th-12th

Join us to experience the sights, scents, and tastes of exotic dishes from regions spanning the world! Tania Hayek Mercer, chef and nutrition advisor highlights five different regions of cuisine in this workshop: French/Italian, Latin American, Mediterranean, Indian, and Thai/Asian. Everyone attending learns how to make at least one dish from each region, taste all the dishes made, and smell, touch, and see interesting herbs, spices, vegetables and fruits, representative of each region. A variety of cooking methods and utensils are discussed. Each student participates in hands-on cooking and takes home the recipes and handouts distributed.  

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike other summer enrichment offerings, this is a 2-hour class. (1pm-3pm)
