ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

All students graduating from The Academy of the Holy Cross must satisfy the following requirements:
Subject Area Credit Requirements
Theology 4
English 4
Mathematics 3 (includes Algebra I ,II, and Geometry)
Social Science 3 (includes U.S. History and World Studies)
Science 2 ½ (Includes 1 credit of Biology & 1 credit of either Chemistry, Physics, or Earth Science and ½ credit of any other science course)
Languages 2 (the equivalent of 2 in the same language)
Physical Education and Health 1 ½ (includes PE I, PE II, and Health)
Art ½  Cart Fundamentals
Performing Arts ½
Elective 3
Senior Project: Every senior participates in a career education experience during her senior year.

 
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
All courses required for graduation are usually taken at The Academy of the Holy Cross during the regular school year. In order to deviate from this norm, special permission must be obtained. If a student fails a required course, she must repeat the semester or semesters failed  in order to be eligible to return to the Academy.
 
WAIVERS
A student may request a waiver of the full-time enrollment requirement during her senior year or apply for early graduation for early college admission. Since a waiver requires careful planning, application for it should be made early in the student's high school career. For information concerning application for a waiver, please contact the Office of Instructional Services.
 
PROMOTION
To advance to the next grade level, the student must have the following number of credits: Sophomore - 6; Junior - 12; Senior - 18.
 
HONORS PROGRAM
The Honors Program is designed for academically advanced and highly motivated students. Emphasis is placed on achievement of goals through extensive use of higher order thinking skills, independent study, and integration of knowledge in an interdisciplinary approach to education.
 
Criteria for entry into honors courses in grades 10-12:

1. Completion of all course prerequisites
2. Minimum B+ semester average in subject areas if the prerequisite course is a regular-level couse, or a B if the prerequiste course in an honors level course , unless specified by department
3. Placement test where applicable
4. Guidance and departmental approval
5. Work samples when appropriate
6. Parental approval
Criteria for entry into honors courses in grade 9:
  1. Score in the appropriate percentile on standardized testing in subject area(s) related to the honors course
2. Cumulative average of B or higher in seventh and eighth grade work; A average in related subject areas
3. Satisfactory score on preliminary test in subject area where applicable
4. Parental approval
 
ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES
The Advanced Placement Program consists of college-level courses for high school students. Most colleges give credit or advanced class placement to students whose scores on the college board A.P. examination are considered acceptable. Courses are open to students in grades 11 and 12.
 
COMPUTER SKILLS
All students are expected to demonstrate proficiency with the computer keyboard.
 

SERVICE LEARNING PROGRAM

Each student participates in Christian Service Commitment activities through service projects sponsored by clubs, specific courses, grade-level classes, the Student Council, or through programs initiated through the Christian Service Commitment Program (CSC). A record of each student's service is maintained and recognition is given annually. Participation in CSC activities constitutes part of course requirements in Religious Studies courses.
 

SUMMER PROGRAM

Each summer, The Academy of the Holy Cross offers a variety of courses to enrich student's academic experience or provide further preparation for courses offered during the school year.  Information on Summer at the Academy is available on our website or in our brochure.
 

THE MADELEVA SCHOLARS PROGRAM

The Madeleva Scholars Program provides a structure enabling students to achieve most fully those qualities articulated in the Mission Statement of the Academy of the Holy Cross: courage, compassion, and scholarship. Students participate fully in five areas of development: Academics, Service, Leadership, Activities and Athletics, and Enrichment.
Students choose to enter the program at the ninth grade-level. Students completing four years of the program receive the Madeleva Scholar Certificate from the school and the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross.
 

The Madeleva Scholar
I. Academics


A. maintains a B average;
B. completes at least one honors course per year, excluding freshmen year;
C. completes a half credit in Public Speaking;
D. submits an Honors Paper at the end of the third quarter of her senior year, advised by a faculty mentor overseeing the inception, progress, and completion of this paper beginning first semester junior year; the Honors Paper is an integrated paper, fully researched and documented, containing at least 2500 words, synthesizing material studied at The Academy of the Holy Cross;
II. Service

performs at least 150 hours of service emphasizing action involving social justice;
III. Leadership
  participates actively in clubs, activities, and/or athletics (grade 9);
runs for an elected office in a club or organization (grade 10);
assumes leadership positions in clubs, activities, and/or athletics (grades 11 and 12);
IV. Athletics/Activities
  participates in a meaningful and committed way in school athletics/activities during each year of her enrollment at the Academy of the Holy Cross;
V. Enrichment
  participates in at least one extra-academic activity per year.
