Students study drawing based on composition in a variety of media
as a foundation for all the courses in
the department. They explore line,
form, and value and begin an
introduction to basic drawing techniques
applied to landscapes, interiors, still lifes, figure studies, and
portraits/self-portraits. (1/2 credit)

Students discover and apply the principles of design through an
intense study of visual graphic
communication using line, form, shape,

Students learn the basic techniques of three-dimensional
sculpture. They work with a variety of
media as they explore three-dimensional

Students learn and apply the basic techniques involved in
preparing clay (wedging) and various
hand-building techniques, such as pinch,
coil, slab, and drape. They create
sculptural forms and practice the
art of glazing. (1/2 credit)

Students execute advanced techniques in ceramic art, focusing
specifically on the techniques of wheel
throwing and glazing. Students apply
skills to perfect the technique of
"throwing" on the potter's wheel. (1/2

Prerequisite: Successful completion of any art course beyond Art
Fundamentals and Departmental approval
Students pursue advanced levels of their previous art class. Under teacher supervision, students work
on an independent level. Students work
during class and at independent meeting
times agreed upon at the beginning of
the course. (1/2 credit)

Prerequisite: Drawing or Departmental approval
Students study the history of painting, use of color, form, and
composition in order to further their
experience of painting as artistic
expression. Students gain experience in
acrylic and water-color painting. They
explore a variety of techniques, such as
transparent overlapping washes,
dry-brush, pen and ink and water-color,
representational, impressionist,
non-representational, flat-design, and
mixed media. (1/2 credit)

Prerequisite: Departmental approval. Drawing and Design are
recommended and presentation of artwork
to demonstrate competency.
In the first semester, students refresh and expand their artistic
skills in drawing from life, in design
and composition, in color theory and
painting, and in the preparation of
their portfolios for review. In the
second semester, students expand their
knowledge of these areas and apply their
skills to printmaking, mixed media, and
three-dimensional forms. Students
investigate a variety of art styles
through research and individual
projects. (1 credit)

Prerequisite: Art Fundamentals, Possession of a 35mm camera and
Departmental approval
Students learn the basics of operating the 35mm camera and of
digital photography. They practice
black and white photo darkroom
techniques. Students examine balance,
composition, and design in photography
through many critical analyses of
selected professional photographs as
well as the works of the students. They
also analyze the effect of the invention
and technological progress of
photography on society. (1/2 credit)

Prerequisite: Mastery of keyboarding skills; Art Fundamentals
Students learn the basics of desktop publishing. They become
acquainted with the computer's
capabilities and limitations. Using
these skills, students utilize layout
design, typography, and import graphics
and photography to the production of
various publications such as two- and
three-fold brochures, business cards,
program covers, ads, and newsletter
layouts. (1/2 credit)

A.P. Art Studio is the equivalent of a
college-level course and could yield
college credit depending on the
student's final score on the official
A.P. assessment and the requirements of
individual colleges. All students
taking the course must take the external
advanced placement examination in the
spring.
A.P. Art Studio is a college-level course
in the visual arts intended to offer the
student a college–level curriculum in
the high-school environment. Students
who successfully complete the course can
request credit from the college or
university they will attend. The
awarding of college credit for A.P. scores
is at the discretion of the individual
schools. Colleges and universities
review a student’s portfolio before
awarding advanced credit. Students
enrolled in the Advanced Placement
Studio Art course produce a minimum of
40 works of art in a variety of media,
techniques, and subject matter. (1
credit)

A.P. Art History is the equivalent of a college-level course and
could yield college credit depending on
the student's final score on the
official A.P. examination and the
requirements of individual colleges. All students taking the course must take
the external advanced placement
examination in the spring.
Advanced Placement Art History is a
college-level course in the history of
Western Art offering the student a
college-level curriculum in the
high-school environment. Students
examine in depth the history of Western
Art from cave painting and Stone Age
sculptures to the late twentieth
century, as well as the art of Asia,
Africa, South and Central America as it
relates to art of the Western World. (1
credit) Students taking this
course may receive credit for History.
