311 French I

Grade 9-12: Full Year

In this first-year course, students are immersed in the target language as they begin to acquire the four basic language skills: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. They converse utilizing short dialogues, questions, and situational pictures. Students reinforce vocabulary and structures through the use of written exercises and interactive oral exercises. Video, audio and internet-based materials are used regularly in class to study various aspects of French civilization and culture. (1 credit)

 

312 French II     

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: French I or equivalent

In the second year of French, students continue their immersion in the language and culture as they develop the four basic skills begun in French I. They study more advanced vocabulary and structures and begin to communicate in French with greater ease. The students further explore the values and customs of the French speaking world, write business letters and travel brochures, and use video, audio and internet-based sources. (1 credit)

 

315 French III

Grade 10-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: French II

Students continue to develop understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and study more advanced grammatical structures. Immersed in the language, they increase their proficiency by discussing reading selections, writing compositions, business letters and resumes, and participating in situational role-playing. Students use video, audio and internet-based sources to expand their knowledge of the French world culture. (1 credit)

 

316 French IV Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: French III and Departmental Approval

Students develop a more advanced level of the four language skills: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on their oral communications and writing abilities. They study and discuss several topics of contemporary interest and write compositions pertaining to these topics. Students continue to study, review, and expand their knowledge of important grammatical structures. (1 credit)

 

319 Advanced Placement French Language 

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Honors French III and Departmental Approval

The yearly offering of this course depends upon sufficient enrollment. A.P. French Language is the equivalent of a college-level language course and could yield college credit depending on the student’s final score on the official A.P. examination and the requirements of individual colleges. All students taking the course must take the external advanced placement examination in the spring.

Students master French grammar and vocabulary, and demonstrate fluency in listening, reading, speaking, and writing in preparation for taking the Advanced Placement French Language test. (1 credit)

 

321 Spanish I

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Note: This course is for students with little or no previous study of the language.

In this first-year course, students are immersed in the target language as they begin to acquire the four basic language skills: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. They converse using short dialogues, questions, and situational pictures. Video, audio and internet-based sources are used to present various aspects of Hispanic civilization and culture. (1 credit)

 

322 Spanish II

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Spanish I or equivalent

In the second year of Spanish, students continue their immersion in the language and culture as they develop the four basic skills begun in Spanish I. They study vocabulary and structures in order to communicate in Spanish with greater ease. The students further explore the values and customs of the Spanish-speaking world using video, audio and internet-based sources. (1 credit)

 

323 Spanish III

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Spanish II and Departmental Approval

Students develop understanding, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Immersed in the language, they increase their proficiency by discussing reading selections, writing compositions, role-playing, and analyzing advanced grammatical structures. Students expand their knowledge of the Hispanic cultures using audio, video and internet-based sources. (1 credit)

 

324 Spanish IV

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Spanish III and Departmental Approval

Students develop a more advanced level of the four language skills in the immersion classroom: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing, with an emphasis on their oral communications and writing abilities. Students are introduced to literature of the Spanish-speaking world, reading works from a variety of Spanish and Latin American authors. They continue to expand their knowledge of grammatical structures, as well as their ability to analyze and compare different Hispanic cultures. (1 credit)

 

325 Spanish for Native Speakers

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Writing sample, interview and placement test

Students of Hispanic heritage will develop stronger formal writing and grammar skills. Correct grammar usage, spelling and more fluid writing styles will be emphasized. (1 credit)

 

329 Accelerated Spanish I Grade 9-12: Full Year
Prerequisite: Placement Test and middle school transcript
Note: This course is designed for students who have previously studied Spanish but need to reinforce basic skills.

In an immersion environment, students will cover the same content as Spanish I but will move at a more accelerated pace with additional activities to empower language learning. (1 credit)

 

372 Honors Spanish II

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Spanish I and Departmental Approval

Students study the Spanish II curriculum at an accelerated pace and utilize supplementary materials to enhance their linguistic development. (1 credit)

 

373 Honors Spanish III

Grade 10-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Spanish II and Departmental Approval

Students in this honors course study the content presented in Spanish III in greater depth and at an accelerated pace. Supplementary materials are used to support linguistic development. (1 credit)

 

374 Honors Spanish IV

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Spanish III and Departmental Approval

Students in this honors course study the content presented in Spanish IV in greater depth and at an accelerated pace. Supplementary materials are used to support linguistic development. (1 credit)

 

375 Honors Spanish V

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: A.P. Spanish Language, or Spanish IV and Departmental Approval

Students further develop their ability to listen, speak, read, and write, through a survey of Iberian and Latin American Literature, cultural essays, films, current newspapers and magazines. Audio, video and internet-based materials are used to bring the Spanish-speaking world into the classroom. (1 credit)

 

376 Advanced Placement Spanish Language

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Spanish III and Departmental Approval

301 Latin I

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Students begin to develop a reading knowledge of Latin through examination of the nature and structure of the language. They learn basic Latin vocabulary and grammatical structures, while reading real Latin by authors such as Catullus, Vergil, Cicero and Horace. Students study English derivatives and loan words, daily life in ancient Rome, the influence of Roman art and architecture, and the lasting cultural legacy of classical civilization. (1 credit)

 

302 Latin II

Grade 10-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Latin I

Students increase their reading proficiency by learning additional vocabulary and grammatical structures. They continue to study English derivatives and loan words. Daily life in ancient Rome is explored in the works of ancient authors, both in translation, adaptation, and the original Latin. (1 credit)

 

306 Latin III: Latin Poetry

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Latin II

In this third year course, students sample the poetry of Ovid, Horace, Catullus and Propertius, tracing themes and styles through their work. Students also read portions of Vergil’s great Roman epic, The Aeneid, which traces the hero’s flight from fallen Troy to the establishment of a new city in Italy, the future Rome. (1 credit)

 

359 Advanced Placement Latin Literature: Catullus/Ovid (Offered 2009-2010)

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Latin III
A.P. Latin is the equivalent of a full year of college-level language course and could yield college credit depending on the student’s final score on the official A.P. examination and the requirements of individual colleges. All students taking the course must take the external advanced placement examination in the spring.

Students read the A.P. committee’s selected poems of the first century BC poets Catullus and Ovid. Students focus on the translation and interpretation of the poems, recognition of literary and rhetorical devices and meters employed, and a solid understanding of the cultural milieu in which the poems are written. (1 credit)

 

358 Advanced Placement Latin Poetry: Vergil

Grade 11-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Latin III

A.P. Latin is the equivalent of a full year of college-level language course and could yield college credit depending on the student's final score on the official A.P. examination and the requirements of individual colleges. All students taking the course must take the external advanced placement examination in the spring.

Following the syllabus established by the College Board’s Advanced Placement division, students in the A.P. Vergil course read substantial portions of Vergil’s The Aeneid, studying the meter in which it is written, figures of speech, diction, syntax, mytho-historical allusions, and the overall place of The Aeneid in Western literature. In addition, students read the entire epic in English to get a sense of the work, which is challenging yet exciting. (1 credit)
