510 Concert Choir

Grade 9-12: 1st Semester

This is an ensemble group that focuses on the traditional concert style of performing. The ensemble has an active performing schedule, and offers leadership opportunities for student soloists. Students will sing and study a variety of concert literature while integrating good vocal technique. This choir is geared toward the beginning music student. (1/2 credit)

 

512 Madrigal Singers

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Departmental Approval and Audition

Students learn the basic fundamentals of singing in an acappella ensemble which specializes in the performance of liturgical music. This group performs publicly many times throughout the year and attendance at these events is mandatory for all students in this class. (1 credit)

 

514 Honors Madrigal Singers

Grade 10-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Two semesters of Madrigal Singers  

Students learn the basic fundamentals of singing in an acappella ensemble which specializes in the performance of liturgical music. This group performs publicly many times throughout the year and attendance at these events is mandatory for all students in this class. (1 credit)

 

518 Introduction to Musical Theatre

Grade 9-12: 1st and 2nd Semester

Students gain a better understanding of the entire musical theatre process through performance and research. The study of theatre aesthetics, history, and criticism is balanced with workshop training in performance and basic production skills. The objective of this course is to provide the student, through participation, with some understanding and appreciation for the art/craft of musical theatre, and through this process to have a life-enhancing experience. (1/2 credit)

 

520 Show Choir

Grade 9-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Departmental Approval and Audition

This is an ensemble group that provides a musical challenge to students with more than average talent and interest. The ensemble has an active performing schedule, and offers leadership opportunities for student soloists and choreographers. Performance often requires dance/movement to enhance the musical presentation. Students will sing and study a variety of music literature. Students will also learn to integrate good vocal technique with dance/movement. Several evening performances are required as an integral part of the curriculum. (1/2 credit) 

 

530 Honors Show Choir

Grade 10-12: Full Year

Prerequisite: Two semesters of Show Choir

This is an ensemble group that provides a musical challenge to students with more than average talent and interest. 516 Stagecraft

Grade 9-12: 2nd Semester

Students learn the skills necessary to realize original designs of costumes, scenery, properties, and lighting. This is a project-based course where the students split their time between the costume shop, the scene shop, and the light/sound shop constructing for the upcoming productions. (1/2 credit) 

 

517 Theatrical Design

Grade 9-12: 1st Semester

Students gain a better understanding of the theatre design process through projects and research. The study of costumes, scenery, props, lighting, and sound is explored through art history, video production, and music. (1/2 credit)

 

521 Instrumental Ensemble

Grade 9-12: 1st and 2nd Semester

Students study, rehearse, and perform instrumental music of varying styles and periods. This course is open to brass, woodwind, strings, and keyboard instruments. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this course. (1/2 credit) Full year is recommended.

 

524 Musical Theatre Choir

Grade 9-12: 2nd Semester

This is an ensemble group that focuses on musical theatre style. The ensemble has an active performing schedule, and offers leadership opportunities for student soloists and choreographers. Students will sing and study a variety of music theatre literature while integrating good vocal technique. This choir is geared toward the beginning music student. (1/2 credit) 

 

544 Introduction to Acting

Grade 9-12: 1st and 2nd Semester

Students gain a better understanding of the art and craft of acting, both as performer and spectator. This specifically includes an application of the creative process and how it impacts everyday life. This course will also cover the major areas of training for the actor. Students will engage in the acting process of: physical and vocal awareness, developing the imagination and senses, observation and awareness, ensemble and group work, solo work, and reflection. (1/2 credit)

 

554 Honors Acting

Grade 11-12: 1st and 2nd Semester

Prerequisite: Two semesters of Introduction to Acting

Students study in depth performance art, theorists, and psychological analysis. This is achieved through scene and monologue studies. This course will continue to cover the major areas of training for the actor. Students will engage in the acting process of: physical and vocal awareness, developing the imagination and senses, observation and awareness, ensemble and group work, solo work, and reflection. (1/2 credit)

 

545 Improvisation            

Grade 9-12: 1st and 2nd Semester

This course is designed for students to gain a better understanding of the performance process through comic timing, staged bits, clown techniques, and mime work, without reference to well-developed scripts. Through a series of classroom exercises and workshops, the students will develop a strong level of self-awareness, space, and environment. (1/2 credit)

 

561 Dance Survey            

Grade 9-12: 1st and 2nd Semester

Students learn the basic principals of movement through the study and exploration of jazz, tap, modern, ballet, and ethnic dance. Students do not need to have any formal dance training or experience to be successful in this class. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this course. (1/2 credit)

 

562 Musical Theatre Dance

Grade 9-12: 1st Semester

Students learn basic technical skills and style elements most closely associated with musical theatre. Students do not need to have any formal dance training or experience to be successful in this class. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this course. (1/2 credit)

 

563 Advanced Musical Theatre Dance

Grade 9-12: 2nd Semester

Prerequisite: Musical Theatre Dance and note from the Instructor

Students learn advanced technical skills and advanced style elements most closely associated with musical theatre. Students also study major choreographers and the styles that made them famous. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this course. (1/2 credit)  

 

565 Tap

Grade 9-12: 2nd Semester

Students learn the basic principals of tap. Students do not need to have any formal dance training or experience to be successful in this class. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this course. (1/2 credit)

 

564 Jazz/Hip-Hop

Grade 9-12: 1st Semester

Students spend one quarter studying jazz and one quarter studying hip-hop. They master movement, vocabulary, and dance style for each concentration. Students must provide their own jazz shoes. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this course. (1/2 credit)

 

566 Advanced Jazz/Hip-Hop

Grade 9-12: 2nd Semester

Prerequisite: Jazz/Hip-Hop and note from the Instructor

Students continue to spend one quarter studying jazz and one quarter studying hip-hop. They master more advanced levels of movement, vocabulary, and dance style for each concentration. Students must provide their own jazz shoes. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this course. (1/2 Credit)
 

567 Introduction to Ballet

Grade 9-12: 1st Semester

This course provides students with a basic understanding of the fundamental principles of classical ballet technique, encourages students to achieve a significant level of self-discipline and physical control, and emphasizes the application of proper alignment and technique. Proper dance attire is required for this class and students must provide their own dance attire. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this class. (1/2 credit)

 

568 Advanced Ballet

Grade 9-12: 2nd Semester

This course provides students with an advanced training level of classical ballet technique, encourages students to achieve a significant level of self-discipline and physical control, and emphasizes the application of proper alignment and technique. Proper dance attire is required for this class and students must provide their own dance attire. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this class. (1/2 credit)

 

569 Introduction to Modern Dance

Grade 9-12: 1st Semester

This is an elementary course in basic modern dance technique that is designed to increase the movement vocabulary of the beginning dance student. It includes basic axial center techniques, loco-motor techniques, and combinations of both. Emphasis is placed on physiologically sound movement progressions, energy contrasts, correct alignment, coordination, flexibility, strength and endurance. Students must provide their own dance attire. Each semester students participate in public performances. Attendance at these performances is mandatory for every student enrolled in this class. (1/2 credit)

 

570 Advanced Modern Dance

Grade 9-12: 2nd Semester

This is an advanced course in modern dance technique that is designed to increase the movement vocabulary of the advanced dance student. It includes basic axial center techniques, loco-motor techniques, and combinations of both. 541 Public Speaking

Grade 10-12: 1st and 2nd Semester

This course is required of all Madeleva Scholars.

Students learn how to be effective communicators by giving persuasive, informative, impromptu, and oral interpretation speeches in the extemporaneous style. In addition, students become critical listeners and explore rhetoric in society. This course DOES NOT count towards the REQUIRED performing arts credit, but it does count as a performing arts elective. (1/2 credit)
