School and Community

The Academy is a private college preparatory high school that has been educating young women in the Catholic tradition for over 135 years. It was established in 1868 by the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and by the Maryland State Department of Education. The Academy has been designated a 1997-98 Blue Ribbon School of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. The Academy is located on a 28 acre campus in Montgomery County near Washington, D.C. The student body is drawn from the surrounding community and reflects the diversity of this major metropolitan area.

 

Students

The current enrollment of 626 students includes 165 Seniors, 161 Juniors, 146 Sophomores and 154 Freshmen.
 

School Year

The school year is divided into two semesters of 18 weeks each with a modified block daily schedule.

A 93-100 B+ 87-89 C+ 77-79 D+ 67-69 F below 60

Grade Point Average

Cumulative grade point average is computed at the completion of every semester. Quality points are assigned to all semester grades, ranging from 4.00 for A to 0.70 for D-. Honors courses are weighted with a 0.5 increment. Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses are weighted with a 0.7 increment.

Senior Project - Senior Career Internship Program

Senior Project is a career education graduation requirement designed to give seniors the opportunity to make more realistic decisions in terms of a career choice. The program enriches the curriculum by enabling seniors to participate in off-campus career placements for three weeks at the end of the fourth quarter. Student work in a variety of career areas including art, business, communications, computer science, drama, education, engineering, health services, mental health services, music, and science. After completing Senior Project, students make a presentation about the experience to their classmates and the student body.
