AHC Principal

TITLE OF POSITION:
  Principal of The Academy of the Holy Cross and Chief Operating Officer.  

REPORTS TO:  The Principal reports to the President of The Academy of the Holy Cross.

 
 
 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  The Principal collaborates with the President in the administration of The Academy of the Holy Cross.  The Principal administers the daily operations of The Academy of the Holy Cross integrating the Holy Cross Heritage and the Roman Catholic faith principles and culture into every aspect of the school program. The Principal is the educational leader of the school. In the absence of the President, the Principal acts on behalf of the President.

SUPERVISORY DUTIES:  The Principal is responsible for recruitment, interviewing, and recommendation of hire (to the President) of all professional and academic support staff, full and part time, in the school.  The Principal evaluates the academic administrators and directs the supervision of the teaching faculty and academic support staff, ensures the supervision of instructional programs and implements professional staff development programs.

CURRICULUM and INSTRUCTION:  The Principal is the instructional leader of the school and chair of the Academic Council.  The Principal establishes and maintains an effective and positive learning climate in the school that supports the teachings of the Catholic Church.  The Principal works with other administrators and teachers to develop, support, assess, and review a unified curriculum and an appropriate student services program.

 COMMUNITY RELATIONS:  The Principal fosters channels of communication with students, parents, Catholic parishioners and the civic community in order to promote the best interests of The Academy of the Holy Cross.  The Principal attends special events and programs that recognize student achievement and attends school sponsored activities, functions, and athletic events.

MANAGEMENT:  The Principal manages the day-to-day operations of The Academy of the Holy Cross.  It is the Principal’s responsibility to see that all regulatory policies and directives from the Archdiocese of Washington and the Maryland State Department of Education are met. The Principal coordinates the use of the building during and before/after school hours.  The Principal assists in the supervision of and monitoring of transportation for the school, assists in the supervision of Food Services, and assists in the supervision of maintenance of the building and grounds.

FINANCES:  The Principal manages the academic budget of The Academy of the Holy Cross and assists the President in the preparation of an annual budget.  The Principal maintains and controls various local funds generated by student activities and other special programs.

 

Responsibilities:

Among the duties of the Principal of The Academy of the Holy Cross are the following:

  1. Implements the Roman Catholic church’s educational ministry for AHC and all its constituencies;
  2. Stewards the Holy Cross heritage and educational philosophy of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross;
  3. Recruits, selects and recommends for hire (to the President) all academic personnel---faculty and support staff;
  4. Works consistently toward improving the quality of instruction within the school by fostering the professional growth of the instructional staff;
  5. Ensures that academic, health and guidance records are maintained;
  6. Assists the President in developing and implementing a strong student recruitment program;
  7. Establishes procedures to ensure the safety of students and all other personnel while on school property;
  8. Provides opportunities for the spiritual and intellectual growth of the student and faculty;
  9. Prepares and presents recommendations for the annual operations budget to the President;
  10. Provides for the scheduling and supervision of all student activities;
  11. Maintains and enforces a non-discriminatory policy;
  12. Coordinates responsibilities and duties of vice-principal and other school administrators;
  13. Develops the school calendar and integrates it with the advancement calendar;
  14. Recommends faculty and staff salary schedules to the President;
  15. Oversees teacher certification;
  16. Serves as liaison with parent and student organizations as needed;
  17. Assists the President in the preparation of all necessary reports;
  18. Chairs the Academic Council that is responsible for designing, evaluating and improving the curriculum including the class schedule, teacher assignments and student performance;
  19. Appoints moderators/coaches/advisors to the curricular and co-curricular activities and ensures compliance with schools mission
  20. Evaluates the performances of the academic chairpersons in consultation with the vice principal or director of curriculum
  21. Designs and implements a just process of teacher supervision and evaluation.
  22. Directs and implements policies for the retention, promotion, graduation, suspension and dismissal of students
  23. Establishes a periodic review of school regulations and oversees enforcement.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned.
