High school students across the country are forgoing high
priced prom wear for a creative way to make a fashion statement and possibly win
a scholarship for college. Two members of AHC’s class of 2009 are participating
in the eighth annual Duck brand duct tape “Stuck at Prom” Scholarship Contest in
which their prom attire is made entirely of Duck brand duct tape. The winning
pair will split a $6,000 college scholarship and the school that hosted the
winning couple’s prom will receive a cash prize of $3,000. A panel of objective
judges will choose the top ten entries based on workmanship, originality, use of
colors, accessories, and quantity of duct tape used. These entries will then be
posted on the “Stuck at Prom” website for public voting from June 13 through
June 29. During the contest period all accepted entries, including those from
previous years, can be viewed at www.stuckatprom.com. The winning couples will
be announced at the beginning of July.

Throughout the school day on
Tuesday, April 22, an AHC student was called out of class every 15 minutes
by a “grim reaper.” Sponsored by the SADD Club, “Every 15 Minutes,” is a
nationwide program designed to raise student awareness of the consequences
of drinking and driving. As a bell rang each quarter hour, one of the 20
student participants left class to apply white face make-up and change into
a black “Every 15 Minutes” T-shirt. The “living dead” then returned to class
but did not speak or interact with other students for the remainder of the
day. That evening the “living dead” attended an overnight retreat which
simulated being separated from family and friends in death.
The next day at a school-wide
assembly, members of the SADD club read letters they had written to their
parents from the perspective that they had died either as a result of
drinking and driving themselves or being killed by a drunk driver. It was an
emotional experience for both the readers and the audience as the students
shared with their families what they will miss the most. The “Every 15
Minutes” program was held the same week as AHC’s Junior/Senior prom, to
remind the students of the dangers of alcohol use.

“The Madeleva Scholars Program provides a
structure enabling students to achieve most fully those qualities articulated in
the Mission Statement of The Academy of the Holy Cross: courage, compassion and
scholarship.” Thirty-seven members of the Class of 2008 completed the four year
program that requires students to excel in academics, complete at least 150
service hours, take on leadership roles in co-curricular activities, and take
part in at least one extra academic activity per year. Students complete the
process by submitting a fully researched and documented paper on a topic
previously determined by the student and her mentor. The 2008 Scholars and their
families enjoyed a reception on Tuesday, April 22, where Sister Katherine Kase,
C.S.C. shared a few words about Sister Mary Madeleva Wolff, C.S.C., St. Mary's
College president for 27 years, whom she had known personally. Six students then
spoke about their research papers and reflected on the program. The papers
encompassed a wide variety of topics including environmental issues, historical
figures, psychology and popular culture. At the close of the reception, the
scholars were presented with their Madeleva Shawls and certificates of
successful completion of the Madeleva Scholars Program.
