All School Field Trip |
|
Each year the students from
The Academy of the Holy Cross take a field trip to a local
museum that relates to material they have studied throughout
the year. As in years past, the Freshmen English classes
visited the National Gallery of Art. The Class of 2011 spent
the day viewing one of the finest collections of Western
painting and sculpture in the world. The students were able
to enjoy European and American painting, sculptures,
photographs and other works of art throughout the day. The
Class of 2010’s trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial
Museum was emotional and memorable for the Sophomore
Theology Classes. As the AHC students visited this memorial
to the millions of European Jews and others killed during
World War II, they were able to see artifacts from
concentration camps, watch historical film footage and
testimonies from Holocaust survivors and gain a greater
understanding of life during this time period. Although the
National Museum of American History has been closed to the
public since September 5, 2006, that didn’t stop the class
of 2009 from participating in the traditional Junior field
trip. While the American History Museum is being renovated,
certain exhibits are being displayed at the Air and Space
Museum which the Junior Class was able to spend the day
studying. |

Fifty-One AHC Students Inducted into the National Honor
Society |
|
Fifty one members of the
Class of 2009 were inducted into the National Honor Society
on Wednesday, May 14. Since its foundation in 1921 by the
National Association of Secondary School Principals, the
National Honor Society has been guided by four main
purposes, "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to
stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership,
and to develop character in the students of secondary
schools." In order to be selected for membership into the
organization, students must meet stringent requirements in
these areas. The National Honor Society requires continued
participation in service projects and maintenance of the
required cumulative GPA throughout the student’s high school
career in order to retain membership.

AHC Students Showcased their Talents at the Spring Music
Concert |
|
The Spring Music Concert was
held Thursday and Friday, May 8 and 9, in the AHC Theater.
The show’s 22 performances consisted of more than 70 student
vocalists and a 13 member Instrumental Ensemble. The
Madrigals, an a cappella group which specializes in the
performance of liturgical music, performed four songs in
English, Latin and French. AHC’s Show Choir integrated dance
and movement into their vocal performances and the Concert
Choir showed their traditional style of performance as they
sang Tears in Heaven and Down in the River to Pray. One of
the three numbers performed by the Instrumental Ensemble
included guest artists Ian Brown-Gorrell and John Miot. The
concert also included solo performances from five members of
the senior class and a performance of the Beatles Let It Be
by the Tri-M Music Honor Society. All the AHC choirs joined
together for three numbers including Revival in the Land
which closed out the show. |
