Auditions

Casting of any play presented by or through the Department of Performing Arts is based strictly on a student’s ability or need without any regard to race or color, unless this is a central issue of the play itself.

For Students Enrolled in a Theatre Class

Requirements:

The standard audition consists of two well-prepared contrasting monologues, no more than two minutes in combined length. Non-dramatic material should be avoided. It is suggested that the selections be consistent with the tone and style of the plays auditioning (though not taken directly from these plays). You may or may not be invited to a callback audition.

When a musical theatre production is included in the season, 16 bars of a song should be substituted for one of the monologues. This song should be consistent with the style of music within the music theatre piece. Actors must supply music in the proper key and it must be easy to read for the accompanist.

For Any Students NOT Enrolled in a Theatre Class

Requirements:

This student does not need to prepare any performance pieces. At the audition, the students will be divided into groups and assigned a short scene or monologue to read. The scene or monologue will be consistent with the tone and style of the play.

When a music theatre production is included in the season, the students (as a group) will be taught a song from the production at the audition in addition to the short scene or monologue. Some students may be asked to sing the song in groups or as a solo during the audition. The song will be consistent with the style of music within the music theatre piece.

For ALL Auditioning Students

Occasionally, special requirements of productions may dictate alterations or additions to the above. In that case, look on the Department of Performing Arts callboard for any updates.

Names of the students selected will be posted on the Department of Performing Arts callboard the day following callbacks. Students must initial beside their name to secure acceptance of a role.
