New Holy Cross Theatre Director Leads First Rehearsal of the Year
Stephanie Zerweck

New Holy Cross Theatre Director Gavin King kicked off rehearsals on Sept. 5, 2023, for the upcoming production of "The Play That Goes Wrong"--not only the first play of the new school year, but the first of King's Holy Cross career.

"My favorite part about working with the Holy Cross Students is their willingness to come into rehearsal and have fun," said King.  "This show is a wild one and everyone involved is handling it with ease and enthusiasm!"

For the 57 students acting in and technically supporting the play--and those he's yet to teach--King suggests the importance of looking at participation through the lens of Russian actor and director Konstantin Stanislavski's quote:  “Love art in yourself, and not yourself in art."

According to King:  "My favorite part about working with Youth and Educational theatre is seeing the growth within the performers, as well as myself as an theatre artist--everyone is always learning and growing, which allows the process to be more centered around the journey and creating theatre!"

In August 2023, King joined The Academy of the Holy Cross Arts Department as Theatre Director for the 2023-2024 season. A native of Kansas City, Mo., he holds a BFA in Acting from Millikin University.

He recently just finished directing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and choreographing Finding Nemo Jr. and Larger Than Life for The New London Barn Playhouse in New Hampshire, and is thrilled to be back in Maryland helping create theatre.

Within his 10+ years of traveling the United States performing, directing and choreographing for various schools, theatres and universities, Gavin has worked in Maryland previously with The Washington International School, Georgetown University and Montgomery County Public Schools, where he assistant directed and choreographed Rock of Ages, Addams Family and Chicago.

Tickets for Holy Cross' performance of "The Play That Goes Wrong" are expected to go on sale Sept. 25, 2023.
