Upton Street Reunion

On Tuesday, October 30, alumnae from the Upton Street campus gathered for a reunion at Holy Cross. Margaret Viehmann Carrig '36, who celebrated her 100th birthday on October 8, traveled from Trenton, NJ to attend!  Members of the Class of 1958 enjoyed their 60th reunion thanks to the efforts of Geraldine Cravaritis Steiner who drove in from New York to be with her classmates. Following Mass student ambassadors joined the guests for lunch to hear stories about the days in Washington, DC, including fond memories of Sister Thomas Aquinas, brown uniforms and traveling by trolley!

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Field Trip

Moving to an outdoor "classroom," the 18 juniors and seniors in the IB Environmental Systems and Societies class attended the annual Chesapeake Bay Foundation field trip October 1–3. The group traveled to the CBF's Karen Noonan Environmental Education Center located in Maryland's Blackwater Wildlife Refuge. While there they learned about the ecology of the Chesapeake Bay and efforts to protect this important resource. Activities included marsh-mucking, oyster-raking, setting crab pots, analyzing data, capturing marsh organisms using different netting techniques, and viewing the Milky Way Galaxy. While there the girls also followed a sustainable living challenge, including reducing water usage, lowering electricity usage, and eliminating food waste.

Senior Named National Hispanic Recognition Program Finalist

Jo Matta '19 (center) with Assistant Principal John Sullivan and President Katy Prebble

Josephine "Jo" Matta '19 has been recognized as a finalist in the National Hispanic Recognition Program.

The National Hispanic Recognition Program, sponsored by the College Board, recognizes high-achieving Hispanic/Latino students who take the PSAT and score above the minimum-required PSAT Selection Index score. The Selection Index in Maryland is one of the highest scores, making it extremely difficult to achieve this accomplishment in this area. In addition to the PSAT score, students that are named finalists must have at least a cumulative 3.5 GPA. Approximately 2% of the Hispanic/Latino juniors in the nation who take the PSAT are recognized as finalists for the program.

Peace Pole Dedicated on International Day of Peace

"May Peace Prevail On Earth." This statement, repeated in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Tagalog, and Kirundi, is displayed on the newly dedicated Peace Pole which has been placed in the Holy Cross front circle. During a special all-school ceremony on Friday, September 21, the pole was dedicated and blessed.

During the assembly beginning in the Holy Cross auditorium, girls in the Peer Ministry class spoke about the establishment of the International Day of Peace (September 21) and the Peace Pole Project, established in 1955 by Masahisa Goi. The six languages chosen for the Academy's pole represent the languages of origin for our students and our sister Holy Cross School in Uganda.

Following the assembly, everyone gathered at the Peace Pole while it was blessed by Father Ben Garcia. The Holy Cross Peace Pole is made of mahogany wood and was handcrafted by Joe Anderson, brother of Director of Social Justice Emily Teter, who organized the ceremony.

Time for Giving…

November is a very busy time. Not only is it the start of the holiday season, but it is also a critical time for schools to be raising funds for student programs. Holy Cross relies on the generosity of our donors—especially alumnae—to help us provide the very best opportunities for our girls. Did you know that the Academy now offers engineering classes and dual enrollment/dual credit with Marymount University? Were you aware that we not only have an amazing resource center for girls with different learning styles, but also the Moreau Options Program for girls with intellectual disabilities? Have you seen the list of colleges and universities that our girls are attending? We are doing great things! Help us continue to educate and empower our girls to become leaders and women of courage, compassion, and scholarship! Please add Holy Cross to your list of charitable organizations this year—it's an investment you can count on!

Make your gift online at by check, credit card or stock transfer to
The Academy of the Holy Cross, 4920 Strathmore Avenue, Kensington, MD 20895. Our girls thank you!

Legacy Circle

Have you considered a planned gift to Holy Cross? We invite you to become a member of the Academy's Legacy Circle, a group of living and deceased benefactors who have included Holy Cross in their wills or estate plans. Your planned gifts provide essential support for all aspects of current student life and help to secure the future of the Academy. Please let us know if we can add your name to our Legacy Circle!
