A Lasting Gift Honoring a Lifelong Friendship

This past month, best friends Mariea Hellmers Sabaté and Margaret "Cookie" Cook, classmates from the Class of 1958, were walking through the halls of Holy Cross to visit their very own theatre seat! Mariea's granddaughter, Cori Sabaté Russell '09, coordinated the donation of the commemorated seat as a tribute to Mariea and Margaret. Appearing on the seat's engraved nameplate are the names of all three alumnae. As Mariea and Margaret were selecting the seat, they turned around to see Cori standing there in the theatre doorway. She had surprised them both by flying in from her home in California for a long weekend visit!

A reunion they will not ever forget…and Holy Cross will never forget their impact, either!

You can purchase a theatre seat for your favorite star! Named seats are $1,000 each. These contributions go toward supporting the Holy Cross Fund. Contact the Advancement Office at (301) 929-6447 for details.

Black History Month Assembly Honoring Black Women in Leadership

Honoring Black Women in Leadership was the theme for this year's Black History Month Assembly on Friday, February 15. The annual program is organized by members of the Holy Cross Onyx Club. This year, the members created a special video for the assembly in which Onyx Club members portrayed prominent Black women leaders. Following the video, alumna Kimberly Peeler-Allen '94 shared her story about how her experiences as a student at Holy Cross shaped the adult she became. Kimberly is the co-founder of Higher Heights, a national organization building the political power and leadership of Black women from the voting booth to elected office. Following the keynote, Katiushka Howell '22 performed "Lift Every Voice and Sing" also known as the Black National Anthem. To conclude the assembly, President Katy Prebble thanked the Onyx Club and Kimberly. She then remarked how Holy Cross aims to have all students empowered to achieve their highest goals.
