Class of 2021 Honor Society Induction Ceremony

Congratulations to the Class of 2021 students who were inducted into the Holy Cross honor societies during a virtual ceremony on Wednesday, September 24. Moderators of each honor society shared the qualifications for acceptance and led the students in reciting the pledges for membership. President Katy Prebble gave the opening prayer and welcome and Principal John Sullivan gave the closing remarks.

Moderator Jean Cotter recognized the 47 members of the Class of 2021 who have demonstrated excellence in the four pillars of the National Honor Society: Scholarship, Service, Leadership and Character.

The motto inscribed on the Science National Honor Society shield translates: “Fortunate is one who understands the causes of things.” Moderator Alison Simon recognized the students being inducted as “willing to engage in the methodical (perhaps sometimes repetitive), the creative, the independent work and the collaborative.” Before their swearing in ceremony, Mrs. Simon also shared the five objectives of the honor society.

Moderator of the National Latin Honor Society, Rachel Mullervy, shared the requirements to be selected for the honor society. She remarked that they not only “[excelled] in the study of language, receiving a 90 or above in the quarters leading into this induction, but have exhibited the joy and enthusiasm which comes from Latin rigor and have fully embraced the beautiful nuances of a language that may be dead but is very much alive in our classroom.”

The Academy of the Holy Cross chapter of the National Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (Spanish Honor Society), Capitulo Santa Teresa, was founded in 2000. Moderator Gabriela Saibene shared that the motto is “Todos a Una” (all for one) and the colors are red and gold. She said, “Students inducted into the society have displayed academic excellence in the study of the Spanish Language.”

Sra. Saibene also acknowledged the students who attained national recognition for excellent performance in the 2020 National Spanish Examination, which is sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. The exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 140,000 students registered in 2020.

La Société Honoraire de Français (French Honor Society) was founded in 1927. Moderator Aurelie Miller noted that the society recognizes students who have studied the French language and displayed not only academic excellence but also an outstanding enthusiasm for the French language and the various cultures of the French speaking countries.

Moderator of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, Laura Meehan remarked that the name Tri-M was derived from the original name of the honor society – Modern Music Masters. She said that the society “is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements and to provide leadership and service opportunities to young musicians.”

Rebecca Cornelius, moderator of the National Honor Society for Dance Arts, shared that the society recognizes the outstanding artistic merit, leadership, and academic achievement of students studying dance. To earn membership the candidates must accumulate over 30 points in dance-related activities during high school and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.

Dale Placek, Moderator of the International Thespian Society, shared the evolution of the name “Thespian” from the first actor Thespis in Greece in 535 B.C. Mr. Placek explained that the members of this honor society are leaders both onstage and backstage. The students inducted joined fellow Class of 2021 students who were previously inducted.
