Holy Cross 2021 Veteran and Novice Teachers

The Archdiocese of Washington High School Principals Association annually recognizes a Novice and Veteran teacher from each of the Catholic high schools in the diocese for their service to Catholic education. The honorees are selected by their peers and are chosen for embracing teaching as a ministry, proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ and demonstrating respect for the Catholic identity and charism of the school. Veteran teachers are considered for characteristics such as modeling a leadership style of respect, having a commitment to personal and professional growth, and engaging in developing students within and outside of the classroom. Novice teachers are considered for characteristics such as demonstrating a commitment to spiritual growth of the community, showing a desire for academic excellence and commitment to professional standards, and caring deeply about the well-being of students, earning respect of both students and teachers alike.

Rachel Gryniewicz has been selected as our Veteran Teacher of the Year Award recipient for 2021 is. Rachel joined the Academy in 2014 as a Latin Teacher, and since that time, has become an exemplary leader and role model for both faculty as well as students.  In addition to teaching Latin, she has greatly contributed to the community by accepting additional responsibilities over the years such as moderating our Student Council, Sign Language Club, Bake for Hope Club, Latin Honor Society, and the Students Against Drunk Driving Club.  To ensure that our new faculty members adjust to the Academy, Rachel led the Faculty Mentor Program for several years.  She also led various group discussions and activities during professional development sessions.  Currently, Rachel is the Department Chair for our World Languages Department.

Erica Mullikin has been selected as our Novice Teacher of the Year Award recipient for 2021.  Erica joined the Academy in 2020 and since her arrival, has become an integral part of our Theology Department as well as our entire community. Her love of Theology as well as her love of teaching is apparent to both our faculty and our student body.  In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Erica is always happy to help with school activities as needed such as our annual Holy Cross Day.  She currently moderates our Student Council as well.

Ms. Gryniewicz and Ms. Mullikin were recognized during the all-school assembly on Monday, October 25.
