A New World

to Educate

Sisters of the Holy Cross in front of building

In 1843, Father Moreau sent four Sisters of the Holy Cross to Indiana to help establish what became the University of Notre Dame. They soon focused on educating young women, founding a school that later became Saint Mary’s College, a leader among Catholic women’s colleges. Over time, the Sisters established more than 100 schools and colleges, including Saint Mary’s College and The Academy of the Holy Cross, both of which continue under their sponsorship.

Needs

Spark Ministry

In 1861, six Holy Cross sisters volunteered as nurses during the Civil War, becoming pioneers of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. Over the next century, they established 19 hospitals, eventually forming Holy Cross Health System. Today, as part of Trinity Health, they continue their global health care ministry.

Serving Around

the World

Since 1853, the Sisters of the Holy Cross have expanded their global ministry to eight countries across four continents. They serve in various roles, including educators, nurses, counselors, and advocates for social justice, making an impact through education, healthcare, and systemic reform.

Signs

of the Times

Since 1843, the Sisters of the Holy Cross have stood against injustice. In 2000, they launched the Holy Cross International Justice Office to address global issues like economic justice, ecological sustainability, and the rights of marginalized people, promoting unified action for justice and peace.
